A yet-to-be-identified teenager has died after an incident at a hotel swimming pool in Owode-Ede, Osun State, triggering tension and protests by aggrieved relatives and associates.

The incident occurred on New Year day at a hotel located along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road, where the teenager reportedly drowned in the swimming pool.

As of the time of reporting, the exact circumstances surrounding the death has not been clearly established.

It was gathered that the following day, some friends and family members of the deceased, dissatisfied with how the situation was handled by the hotel management, stormed the premises in protest.

The development caused panic in the area before security agencies moved in to restore calm.

Sources familiar with the incident said the prompt intervention of operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, prevented the situation from escalating into violence.

“The incident happened on January 1 when the teenager died inside the hotel’s swimming pool and was confirmed dead.

“On Friday, some people who were unhappy with the hotel’s response came back to protest. The police and NSCDC intervened, and the matter was brought under control,” an eyewitness disclosed.

Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, said the situation did not amount to a mob action.

According to him, the deceased’s family returned to the hotel to express their grievances, but the matter was later resolved amicably through the intervention of security personnel.

“The victim died inside the hotel’s swimming pool. The family went back to express their concerns, but the issue was settled peacefully,” Giwa-Alade said.

He added that the police have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, assuring that findings would be made public at the conclusion of the inquiry.
